For the Uninitiated: Ban Bossy

ban bossy

Ban Bossy is a television and social media censorship advocacy campaign designed to ban the word “bossy” from general use due to its perceived harmful effect on young girls.

The campaign was devised by Sheryl Sandberg’s in partnership with the Girl Scouts of America. It has featured various sponsors and prominent women including Michelle Obama, Condoleezza Rice and Beyonce urging people to pledge not to use the word.  A related website provides school training material, guidance on workplace leadership and an online pledge form where visitors can promise not to use the word

I know when you were little girls
You dreamt of being in my world
Don’t forget it, don’t forget it
Respect that, bow down bitches

Bow down bitches, bow bow down bitches
Bow down bitches, bow bow down bitches
H-town vicious, h-h-town vicious
I’m so crown, bow bow down bitches

The campaign has received support from feminists and numerous sponsors, including google.  It has also received some criticism, for example one critic noted the comparison between the banning of words and authoritarianism, observing the irony that telling people what words they can or cannot use is inherently bossy.

Not everyone has fallen into line obviously, take Gerri Chambers CEO of Team Bossy Gals, for example.  She wants to create a women dominated conglomerate by selling copies of her book ‘Bossy!’, paraphrasing Rudyard Kipling and is giving YOU ‘the opportunity to dive head first into boiling water’.
